Archive Reports from 2007 (PDF) Reports from 2006 (PDF) Report to 23rd June 2008 Fishing has become progressively harder - trout are very selective due to lower oxygen levels and bright sunlight. Final fishing day is Sunday 29th of June when the winners of the biggest fish of the month competition will receive their prizes! Don’t forget the free coaching day on Saturday the 28th-all are welcome. Cwm Hedd will be offering evening tickets, 5pm till dusk, Wednesdays through to Sundays, starting on Wednesday 2nd of July. Report to 16th June 2008 Fishing was generally harder last week as temperatures rose. Red and black montanas and red buzzers took most fish, whilst diawl bachs and damsels also worked. Tony Crocker took the biggest fish this week at 5lb 2oz on a buzzer. Alan Stonelake took three to 10 ½ lb on montanas. David Haynes Knight four on a damsel fished midwater. Don’t forget the free coaching day organised by the Torfaen Angling Participation Project on Saturday 28th June 10am until 3pm-all welcome. Report to 9th June 2008 Hotter, brighter weather last week saw trout descending to cooler, more oxygenated water. Lures including fritz and cats whiskers worked best-fished slow and deep. Deri Williams a total of six on cats. Tony Carrington two taken to 6 ¼lb including a 3 ½ lb on lures. Steve Price a 4 ½lb on a cat. Cwm Hedd will be hosting a free coaching day on Saturday June 28th, 10am until 3pm. Everyone is welcome, from novices who want to try their hand at both fly and coarse fishing to experienced anglers who would like to hone their skills. A fly tying demonsration will also take place in the lodge. Report to 2nd June 2008 Another good week at Cwm Hedd-most fish caught were 3lb and over, taking a variety of patterns including buzzers, cats and damsels. Don Crocker one taken and ten released on cats, buzzers and nymphs. Roger Jones six on bloodworm and black tadpole. Howard Davies four taken to 14lb on a black woolly bugger. John Turner three to 10lb on cats. Martin Davies four to 14lb on cat and buzzer and finally Tim Morris four to 12lb on cat, fritz and buzzers. Report to 12th May 2008 Fishing was harder last week - slow and deep brought the best results. Roger Jones one taken and nine returned on buzzers. Andy Parks and Mark Denatalie each took one and released five on cats and damsels. Don Crocker one taken and six released on buzzers. Ken Pascoe three fish to 11 ½ lb including a 5 ½ lb on black fritz. Finally, John Bedwanie one taken and seven released on damsel and green buzzer. Report to 6th May 2008 Another exciting week at Cwm Hedd, with some excellent returns both in numbers and fish size. Once again, buzzers, diawl bachs and hoppers dominate - trout also being caught on cats whiskers. Great top of the water sport especially in spring bay and on the east bank. Martin Townsend takes the lead in this months Big Fish Comp, landing a fin perfect 6lb 12oz on a lure fished deep. Andrew Crocker a 6lb 2oz on a bibio. Darryn Groves one taken and nine returned on buzzers. Roger Jones one taken and nine returned on buzzers and cats.
Report to 27th April 2008 Another excellent week at Cwm Hedd! Spring warmth saw good hatches of buzzers, and trout feeding on fry close in. Darren Groves eighteen returned and one taken home on black buzzers. Roger Jones one taken and nine returned on black buzzers. Don Crocker one taken and eight returned on black buzzers. Ian and David John took home eight fish between them to a total of 23lb on cats whiskers and finally Terry Coles one taken and thirteen returned on buzzers. Report to 20th April 2008 Once again, the fishery has seen some excellent returns this week - most fish landed have been at least 3lb in weight with a large proportion at 4lb plus. Ian Humphreys takes the lead in the Biggest Fish comp with his 6 ½ lb caught on an olive damsel. Ken Barry from Bristol took home six fish totalling 18lb, using bloodworms and montanas. Junior Alex Jaundrell landed nine on a red fritz and woolly bugger, Darren Groves took home a fin perfect 4lb 12oz and released a further fourteen on buzzers. Finally Tony Huxley took one and landed a further thirteen on blobs, montanas and Diawl Bachs. Kinder weather is forecast for the weekend, so look out for those prolific hatches of buzzers. Report to 7th April 2008 A harder week at the fishery, very changeable weather conditions leaving trout unsettled. Mathew Williams celebrated his birthday by bagging three fish to 9lbs on a yellow and white lure. Sean Watkins three fish to 9lb on a buzzer. Colin Cox two to 6lb 14oz on buzzers and fritz. William Greer visiting from Scotland took two to 7lb 4oz, including a 5lb on a damsel. Report to 14th April 2008 Some excellent returns at the fishery this week: damsels, fritz and diawl bachs being most productive. Sean Owen three to 8 1/4lb on diawl bach. Stuart Burrows two to 6lb on diawl bach and GRHE. Alan Phillips two to 9lb 8oz including a 5lb11oz on lures. Ken Pascoe a nice 5lb12oz on diawl bach. David Haynes Knight one taken to 6lb 2oz and three returned on damsel. Chris Price one taken to 6lb1oz and five returned on a brassy buzzer and finally Brian Thorpe a fin perfect 6lb 2oz rainbow on a damsel. High winds, once again, have made for some harder fishing –both westerlies and northeasterlies in particular. Roger Andrews took one home to 3 ½ lb and released a further five on a cockabundy that he tied himself: a very pleasing outcome. Gerry Nottingham two fish to 7lb including a 4lb on cats. David McCann and Lloyd Jeremiah thirteen taken on fritz and cats. Report to 16th March 2008 Another week of good returns at Cwm Hedd in spite of high winds and heavy rain. Inlet bay has been particularly productive, with both lures and nymphs working well on floating lines. Towards the latter part of the week when the strong westerlies had died down, the east bank really turned on. Shoals of fish, cruising the margins after fry, where aggressively taking both cats and fritz. Darren Groves one taken and seven returned on lures. Marcus Harding from Bath, one taken and eight returned on tadpoles and buzzers. David Haynes Knight one taken to 3 ½ lb and six returned on fritz. Finally junior Alex Jaundrell one taken and eleven returned on a woolly bugger. Most fish caught this week have been 3lb plus with anglers reporting a high percentage returned weighing over 5lb. Don’t forget the Biggest Fish of The Month competition-no entry fee and the chance to win a Limited Edition Aluminium Fly Reel. Report to 9th March 2008 Cwm Hedd has been fishing very well in spite of strong westerly winds. Many overwintered fish in excess of 4lb have been caught this week and, when spooned, have been found to be full of roach. Next week should see the buzzer hatches begin in ernest and buzzer patterns, including Diawl Bach and bloodworm, will be the first choice of many anglers. Some of last weeks returns include: Deri Williams - four fish to 16lb 2oz,Ken Pascoe - four fish to 12lb, Terry Coles one taken to 4lb and a further nine released on bloodworm and cats, Darren Groves a total of twenty six fish on bloodworm, white fritz and damsel. Gavin Rogers is currently leading in the Big Fish competition and may take the prize of an engraved aluminium fly reel worth £120 - unless a trout larger than 5lb is caught in the next three weeks! Report to 2nd March 2008 Some good returns in the fine weather midweek - the weekend saw very strong winds making casting difficult. Fritz, cats and also buzzers took fish many over 3lb. Wayne Tadman two taken to 7lb including a 4lb 4oz on a zonker. Ken Barry four to 12lb including a 4 1/2lb on a black and orange lure. Junior Alex Jaundrell a nice 4lb on a cat. Novice Nathan Alway a 4 1/2lb on an orange fritz. Don Crocker one taken and six returned on bibio, green and white and black and green. As I write this report I am reminded of the saying, ”March-in like a lion, out like a lamb”, lets hope so! Last Months’Biggest Fish Of The Month Competition was won by Ken Pascoe, who will be receiving his prize of a limited edition cnc flyreel on Saturday. This last week has produced some great sport at Cwm Hedd. Conditions have been challenging - from calm, frosty mornings to gale force winds and rain, but some fine returns have been logged. Most fish have been caught on lures, no doubt whilst feeding on fry over the winter months. Jason Williams, Mark Hackman, David Hill and Paul Rawding are a few of the anglers who took fish over 5lb topped only by Ken Pascoe who landed an impressive 8lb 9oz on Diawl Bach. Size isn’t everything proved by Steve Groves and Steve Leo who landed over ten each on orange and yellow blobs respectively. Junior angler Daniel Rees from Rogerstone had a day to remember catching three rainbows totalling 9lb. Each month Cwm Hedd will be giving away a CNC flyreel worth £120 for the biggest fish caught and killed and automatic entry into the autumn fish off. An evening flytying demonstration hosted by ‘Trout Fishermans’ Ceri Jones will be held on Wednesday 5th March at 7pm-places are limited to twenty at a cost of £5. Please make your reservations at Cwm Hedd lodge. And finally, Ken Pascoes record was beaten on Thursday by Lucy Harris who landed a beautiful 9lb10oz baby girl named Phoebe. As you know Lucy is in charge of the Cwm Hedd website - apparently Phoebe gave a hard fight and was played for a whole day! Congratulations to Mum and Dad(Andrew) and hope to see you soon! Report to 3rd February 2008 Cwm Hedd has fished very well this week, with some excellent returns. Dean Flounders four fish to 11 ¾ lb biggest 4lb 3oz, on orange fritz. David Hill two taken,best to 5lb 13oz on cats. Jason Williams one taken to 4 ¾ lb plus a further five released including a 6 ½ lb on black and green cormorant. Report to 27th January 2008 Better weather has seen far more enjoyable fishing and some good returns have been reported. Bill Jones two fish taken the best to 5lb on a floating line and black tadpole. Jason Williams one taken and eight released on cats and nymphs. Mike and Ian Rogers thirteen fish on lures and finally Marcus Jones one taken and eight released on damsels, cats and fritz. Report to 21st January 2008 Very bad weather last week made fishing extremely difficult, with only the west bank and inlet bay fishable due to strong westerly winds and heavy rain. Ken Pascoe 3 ¾ lb on woolly bugger, Russell Way two to 5 ½ lb on cats, Roy Davies a 3lb taken and three released on cats.
Report to 13th January 2008 Despite some heavy rain and strong winds this past week, returns have remained very good. Top flies are cats’whiskers, fritz and damsel. Ken Pascoe one taken to 4 ½ lb and a further six released on a damsel. Junior Alex Jaundrell two to 8lb and two released on a damsel - well done Alex! John Edwards two to 6lb including a 4lb blue on a white and green cat, and finally Robert Adams one taken and a further eight released on fritz.

Colin Thomas two fish to 6lb on black buzzers. Fish of the week (4 ½ lb) caught by Nigel Thomas on a white and pink cats whisker. Inlet bay remains very active, particularly before midday.
